If you’re a U.S. citizen planning to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, family, or short-term study, there’s a key update you need to know: obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Below you’ll find everything you should know about the ETA requirement and how using DogPay can make your travel and spending easier.
The UK ETA is a digital travel permission required for eligible travellers who do not need a visa for short stays. It allows the UK government to pre-screen visitors ahead of arrival.
While holding an ETA is necessary for entry (if required for your nationality), it is not a visa and does notguarantee entry—the final decision remains with UK border control.
For U.S. citizens, if you’re visiting for up to 6 months for tourism, business, family visits, or short-term study—or transiting via the UK border—you will need the ETA.
U.S. citizens must have an approved ETA starting 8 January 2025 when travelling to or via the UK, unless they already hold a visa.
You can apply through the official “UK ETA” mobile app or the official UK government website.
The application fee is £16 (approx. US $20) per person.
Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner), and allows multiple entries during that period. Each stay can be up to 6 months.
Traveling is not just about permissions—it’s also about managing your money smartly. Here’s how DogPay helps:
Multi-currency wallet + seamless spending: Load currencies into your DogPay account ahead of time; once in the UK you can spend or convert as needed, with fewer surprises.
Transparent fees & fair exchange: You’ll clearly see what you’re paying. Using DogPay for payments in the UK helps avoid heavy mark-ups or hidden conversion fees.
Payments in-store & online: From lunch in London to hotel booking via website, your DogPay card or account = easy payment, less cash to worry about.
Security & control: Monitor spending, lock your card, manage your account in the app—all in real time, from wherever you are.
Before departure: ensure your DogPay account is funded, enable international payments on your card, and check your passport’s expiration date.
After arrival: use DogPay for major expenses; keep only a modest amount of cash as backup.
If you plan to stay over 6 months, work or study long-term, check visa requirements rather than relying solely on the ETA.
Save your ETA confirmation (screenshot or email). It’s linked to your passport, so if you change your passport you’ll need to apply again.
Activate notifications and lock-card features in your DogPay app to stay secure.
Heading to the UK? Having your passport is just the start—if you’re visiting for short stays, you now also need an ETA. Meanwhile, managing your money shouldn’t be stressful. Use DogPay to make sure your permissions and payments are both covered with ease.
